axes! The sun never shone anymore, only dark clouds resided,
Hopes of a messiah over the people’s prayers presided.
As days passed by, the evil queen grew stronger,
The future of the land could never have been wronger.
She asked the wizard to make a potion so full of power,
That it would hypnotise the king and make him command his army from the royal tower.
“His voice must echo,” she said, “Over brooks, meadows, and plain,”
“And such should be his conviction that no one would disdain.”
When the wizard asked, as to what the king should command,
“A war on the neighbouring state,” the queen did strongly demand.
The wizard agreed, the potion was made, everything was perfect,
But somehow, through all that sleep, the king’s mind he could not infect.
In his sleep, the king saw, the beauty of a golden lake,
The green meadows of his land, the future to which he must awake.
He heard praises of joy, minstrels’ songs of love and peace,
A land free of disease, pain, hunger, and enemies.
And as the wizard tried harder, to penetrate his royal sleep,
The king saw a fantastic deer stand by the lake and softly weep.
He wanted to embrace the deer, protect it from all evil,
The deer looked straight into his eyes, and in the reflection in his eyes, the king saw the devil!
The devil, who was in the king, under his skin, in his sleeping brain,
The devil, who should be banished, and forgotten forever again.
The deer vanished, the king smiled, it was time to wake up,
Time to fight off treachery, and destroy the devil’s cup.
The king slowly opened his eyes, wincing at the bright light,
He smiled to himself, the vision of a grand future in his sight.
And slowly that cursed summer rolled into autumnal prime,
And the king resided in his happy court with his daughter this time.
The queen was banished, the wizard was killed, the kingdom filled with laughter,
And thus, the magical land of the Deer, lived happily ever after!
