Longest Dream

Every night it is the same as it was before in my dreams. I’m a child again carefree and happily playing in a small pond that was my favorite place in the world to go. Suddenly I feel compelled to walk to a nearby river. The water is as clear as glass and it swirls, flows, loops and rushes down a bend beyond sight. I wade into the waters, gazing down stream looking for the end—yet it isn’t there. Ever present, ever pouring, it does not stop cascading over countless rocks.

A part of me desperately wants to know where the river goes, but I know there is something I must do first. I look around and my eyes fall on an old newspaper that sits on a bank near the river. I am overwhelmed by the desire to fold the paper into a crude little boat. [...]

[...] As I place my tiny ship into the river, the current pulls it from my hands. I chase after it, heedless of my bare feet as they scrape and stub themselves on unseen rocks in the river. Before my eyes the little paper boat transforms and becomes a real boat. Suddenly I find that I am no longer a child, but a man. I eagerly climb into the boat and it carries me faster down the river than I would have thought possible. Such is the swiftness of the current that before I know what has happened, I find myself having traveled far from where I started. I can no longer see the little pond that I splashed in as a child.

The sun is setting and something in the sky has caught my attention. I look and behold the moon, so enormous and vibrant with light that I feel sure that if I could fly but a little ways I would reach it. But my body was now old and withered something about the river had caused me to age. A crane swooped down from the pale blue sky and landed next to me. It looks into my eyes with a puzzled expression. The bird stretches out one of its great wings as if pointing to the moon. The bird knew my heart desired to go where he pointed, but I shook my head sadly. I was too old and too withered to make such a journey, the river had changed me.

Several more birds landed, and they too gestured towards the sky, towards the moon. Their presence assures me and I feel my confidence grow, and in my heart I know that I too could fly through the clouds and sky to the moon. There was rest up there, true rest if I am willing to let myself go.

The birds around me squawked and I know that it is now my time. I stretched out my arms and find they have transformed into wings such as theirs. I look up and propel myself into the air. Soon I am flying into and among the clouds, taking a journey that I always knew was coming, but was never sure when I would take it. I am very old and weary now, but every night I have only one dream. It is the same dream, and one day I will be there...
