“Oh my king, would have it been so difficult for thou to make sure that the royal hounds didst not bark all night? Or to keep the hounds from digging up the wizard’s garden? Or prevent them from befouling his lawn? Oh, what is to become of us?”
“I cannot believe he would dare to do such a thing to us. He was the one who started this little feud! My lovely hounds are hardly as offensive as that pipe-weed smell that comes wafting into our great hall. Who didst he think that he was sending smoke rings hither and yon through our castle?”
“He’s a wizard my lord, that is who he thought he was.”
“No need to get clever with me my lady. Surely there must be something that we canst do to lift this curse? Where hath my loyal duke gone? Ah there he comes. No! Be it not true. My loyal friend Jack hath been transformed as well?”
“Sire, it is true, the entire castle has become as a deck of cards. Yet we need not fear, the wizard sent over an errand boy with this message. He sayeth that our curse is not permanent!”
“Well, that is something I guess. When shall he lift the curse? Did he say how long he plans on this odd punishment being carried out?”
“My liege, the message says that he shall lift the curse when he passes this way again in September, after he is done visiting some friend called Baggins who lives in a far off land.”
“That be a while to wait, but I guess I cannot debate a wizard. Minstrel! Play us a happy tune to help us keep our minds off the time we must—never mind, I guess you need arms to do that. Egad, this is going to be a long wait.”
