He would shake his fist and threaten to destroy them both if she ever let down her guard.
When she awoke, the young woman asked around the village, but no one could tell her the meaning of her dreams. But one evening as she slept, she finally realized the meaning of those dreams, as she finally met the shadowy warrior.
Once more she was at the gates of her kingdom, but this time, the shadowed figure stepped forward where she could see him. He was the ruler from the realm of nightmares, and indeed he was a nightmare to look at. He had the head of pumpkin and the body of a scarecrow, and he seemed to tower over her. Cackling madly, one hand on his hip and the other pointing down at her he spoke aloud, “So, you think you have no fear, do you? You think you can dance forever through your kingdoms without a care? I see you shaking, small one. You have been chosen by fate to rule in the land of dreams, but I have come from the land of nightmares and I come to conquer. Run away little girl, before I destroy you.”
The girl did not run though. She looked into the demon’s eyes and spoke. “Indeed I do shake,” she said. “I thought I feared no beast, yet you do frighten me. But fear or no, I will stop you.”
He growled and snapped viciously as he leaped towards her, not seeing the sword she always hid at her side. With a swift slash she dealt him a fatal blow. But alas, for the orange blood of the demon that splashed on her fine white clothes that day. That blood was a curse filled thing and her fate was forever sealed.
With his dying breath the demon king laughed and pointed at her saying, “Whosoever spills my blood is cursed to become the new ruler of nightmares, doomed never to wake. If you stop moving too long in this realm, I will have won. Only through movement are the nightmares kept at bay. For when you stand still, then people will have nightmares always.”
She swayed slightly as she stood over him and was saddened. But the young woman did not fear the dying king’s words. “Though I must now rule your kingdom, by making me sleep forever, you have brought me into my kingdom as well. True I must rule the land of nightmares, yet they will never be as bad as they once were, for they will be tempered with far sweeter dreams from the other kingdom that I rule.” As the evil king died the young woman began to dance as she always had.
She does tire at times, and has to also rule the kingdom of nightmares so sometimes those seep through to us. But she dances there as well, so the nightmares are never as bad as they once were. And thus the prophecy came true, and the young woman had become the ruler of two kingdoms; that of nightmares, and of dreams. She dances through them still.
